Value by redemption type

Avios has the widest value spread of any currency we track. Distance-based award pricing makes short partner flights exceptional and makes surcharge-heavy long-haul flights mediocre. Our headline 1.7¢ assumes you use the sweet spots at least some of the time.

RedemptionRealistic value per Avios
Short-haul partner awards (American, Alaska)1.7–3.0¢
Qatar Qsuite and partner premium cabins (low-surcharge routes)1.5–2.5¢
British Airways short-haul from Canada or within Europe1.2–1.8¢
British Airways long-haul (fuel surcharges apply)0.8–1.4¢
Part-pay with Avios on cash tickets0.5–0.8¢
Hotels, wine, and merchandise≤0.8¢

The rule of thumb: the shorter the flight and the higher the cash fare, the better Avios perform. A short-haul American Airlines award that would cost $350 in cash can price under 12,000 Avios with minimal taxes. The trap runs the other way — transatlantic British Airways awards add hundreds of dollars in carrier surcharges that quietly gut the per-point value.

Frequently asked questions

How much are Avios worth?

The Points Standard values British Airways Avios at 1.7 cents each (CAD, 2026-07-01 index) for an informed redemption, with a floor of about 0.8 cents on cash-style redemptions. Short-haul partner awards on American and Alaska can reach 3 cents per Avios.

How much are 50,000 Avios worth?

About $850 at our Standard value of 1.7¢ per Avios. Spent on short-haul partner flights — where distance-based pricing shines — the same balance can exceed $1,200; spent part-paying cash tickets, it can fall below $400.

How do Canadians earn Avios?

Two main routes: transfer Amex Membership Rewards points to British Airways Executive Club at 1:1, or convert RBC Avion points. Both banks run periodic transfer bonuses that can add 30% or more — the single best time to move points into Avios.

What is the Avios sweet spot for Canadians?

Short-haul partner awards. Avios pricing is distance-based, so short flights on American and Alaska — routes that often cost $300+ in cash — price at just a few thousand Avios plus minimal taxes. Long-haul British Airways awards, by contrast, attract fuel surcharges that erode most of the value.
