The verdict

The classic entry-level travel-card question: a flexible points program versus a single airline's currency. Avion's redemption chart can clear 2¢ on short-haul flights and points transfer to Avios and WestJet, giving it more places to go; the TD Aeroplan card answers with a free checked bag on Air Canada and preferred Aeroplan redemption pricing that Avion can't touch. Air Canada regulars take the TD; everyone who wants optionality takes the Avion.
